Union YES! [Which Side Are You On?]
I stand with labor. I am so proud to be the daughter of a Union man. I am proud of all workers across the globe and especially those who have made sacrifices for the many.
“It’ll take more than a union law to take the fight out of a [wo]man”

köszönöm a húgam, Nicoletta, for sharing this with me. Shout out to our animal sisters and brothers for walking with us daily (even though so many of us are assholes).
Mystical Mantra Energy
Apparently here in Europe there’s a Jesus holiday going on today. Something about the Holy Spirit. Obviously, I am not well versed but respectful. Posting this, my favorite version of Hare Krishna, in respect to the holiness of the day. But isn’t everyday holy?
“A mantra is mystical energy encased in a sound structure and each mantra contains within its vibrations a certain power. But of all mantras, the maha-mantra (the Hare Krishna mantra) has been prescribed as the easiest and surest way for attaining God Realization in this present age.”
George Harrison (1943-2001),
in his autobiography :’I, me and Mine’

Ikon Allah
If G-d wills it…
Is it possible that I am becoming more religious in a sense? My recent trip to Israel left me more proud of my heritage + culture but also with a profound sense of faith. I spent much time in Jaffa where there is a beautiful blend of Jews + Muslims living harmoniously with one another. One day, I found myself sitting on the rocks above waves crashing on the beach with strangers at 4 in the morning. We looked up at the stars and thanked G-d for the beauty we were experiencing. At that moment the Iman began his calls for prayers at the mosque. To hear this sound before dawn was eerie and other worldly. I felt as if I was having an out of body experience. The sound wasn’t unfamiliar, I’ve heard it before but I’ve changed. As the vocalist Abdullahi sings “Ikon Allah” – Will of G-d, I too sing this tune. If certain things in my life are meant to be, it is the will of G-d and I leave it up to the higher powers that be. I know what I want but if it it is the will of G-d, it will come to be.
I Want To Be On That Runway

Scottie B once shouted out “this one’s for Natalie” right before he dropped this at the club.
Just Remember, America’s Right Behind You

The Way the Blue Could Pull Me In…
Last night, on my way home from an incredible conciousness raising evening, I listened to The Cure’s Paris album. Originally from their 1992 release WISH, A Letter To Elise is one of my favorite tracks from the band. Feeling so dreamy…
In My Dreams I Dance Like This.
Quote: “Elvyna is just a french little girl who is performing African dance (from Côte d’Ivoire and Congo) and Zouk dance (from Gouadeloupe – french caraibes).”
Si Una Vez
I love Selena. Selena represents so much hope and cross over. Ah what a beauty.
Here she is performing Si Una Vez – notice the way she moves and communicates. What a performer.
My friend Holly, pictured below, dressed up as Selena one Halloween. I was floored and impressed. Kinda bummed I didn’t think of it before but really, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (alluding to possible Selena costume this year).
Speaking of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, check out this version of Si Una Vez.
Flight Patterns
Flight Patterns by Charlie McCarthy. Find more of his work here.
Reminds me of my found footage class with the lovely & oh so talented Jeanne Liotta.

Stylephile
Lauren Matic agreed to participate in my final project. She gave me clips and clips and clips from her visits to Afghanistan and Darfur. Reviewing them for footage wasn’t the easiest thing to do. At one point I just had to detach myself from them completely.
I wrote the script to Stylephile with a little shame. I don’t have a tv but drew from the “style” shows I’ve seen in the past. Most recently of the grammy awards while dining with a friend who recently developed a human rights video game. We were floored at the content of the show at the time. And like a car accident, couldn’t bring ourselves from staring. I used this experience as inspiration along with the downtown ny culture or lack there of that I am all too familiar with.
The shoot was like Murphy’s Law. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. The location had to be changed, to my apartment. The make up artist flaked out (who was written in to the script). The back drop wasn’t doing what it was supposed to do. My cameraman was hungover. I was soooo tired from not sleeping because of the anxiety.
Nevertheless, we pulled it off. 6 hours of shooting was exhausting. The sound quality isn’t ideal and unfortunately, I don’t know pro tools (note to self to learn this). I am obsessed with getting better at visual composure. I wasn’t behind the camera this time but set up the frame which looked pretty good. Lauren, being a consummate professional, looked and acted amazingly. I put on my best BS face and hell, we were good to go.
The editing process was lengthy and the final version was about 8 minutes long. Thankfully I ran into Traci from class who suggested pulling much of the content for consistency and timing. Here is the final project.
Marian Newman – Show Studio – Political Fashion
Check out this interesting piece from Marian Newman.
Lauren Matic
I met Lauren Matic recently. She is incredible. She’s an engineer turned journalist and field producer who has covered and reported from all over the world.
Check her out on her website.
Vito Acconci + Laura Parnes
Vito Acconci. Fucking brilliant. Fucking over rated. I didn’t fucking think of it. I dig it.
Some of Vito’s work:
We’re gearing up to do a two channel piece. The class met at Participant Gallery on Houston. This place was pretty awesome. I loved most of the work. Laura Parnes, our instructor, had a 2 channel piece. One channel was footage of a family relaxing on rolling hills in the country, the other channel featured footage from animals in the wild hunting and being hunted. Personally, I’m interested in the human experience being so far from its nature. We are so out of tune from everything. I felt like this piece was commenting on that.
Life On Screen
Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle reminds me of something I read waaaay back in undergrad. Sherry Turkle’s Life on Screen.
We screened our 3 minute film, it was well received although seeing others’ I wish we’d been a little more brave with our performances. I guess you live and learn.
Check out Omer Fast, who I am sooo into:
3 Min Performance Piece
I teamed up with Traci Gushiken for the first assignment. It’s a 3 minute performance piece. Please note, we are not performance artists. So what the hell do we do?
We decided to do something simple and obvious – KARAOKE!!! Karaoke, the ultimate performance for the regular citizen. We met up on a Saturday early evening for drinks at Niagra for their 2 for 1 Happy Hour special. Luckily, it was the pre-douche bag bridge and tunnel hour so we were drinking with natives and neighborhoodies. After throwing back a few vodka sodas we went down the block to Sing Sing.
Thankfully Sing Sing has private booths so we we set up shop with the Panasonic 3 chip. We sang our hearts out for a couple of hours. Everything from Blondie’s Call Me to Biz Markie’s Just a Friend.
During the editing process we decided to combine songs in order to make new songs, used a lot of looping techniques. It was sort of annoying as is karaoke.
Semiotics of the Kitchen by Martha Rosler
Had to read Martha Rosler for class. The piece reads like a dissertation, challenging the ideas in popular media as well as the avant guard. She slams curator’s, unafraid like so many artists to point out their lack of courage when choosing work to exhibit. Rosler’s pretty incredible. Check out this video below.
Introduction to Experimental Video
Had my first Experimental Video class with Laura Parnes this week. We watched different pieces from artists like Kristin Lucas and the above artist Momoyo Torimitsu. Suuuupppper into it. The potential is infinite with experimental video.
First assignment is a 3 min performance piece.
