The Heart Will Win

“The heart should play an important role, not only in married life, but in all of our relationships: with friends, relatives, business associates, and even strangers. Even if the other person uses the head, you should use more heart. Remember, ultimately the heart will win; it might take time but it will win. If you really want to use your heart, you will be guided in that direction. God’s guidance will be there. Pray more and trust in that higher force.

Om Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi”

Lady Don’t Tek No – Latryx

After months of putting it off, I finally went to the gynecologist today. I must say that I’ve certainly had plenty of strange experiences in my life – but not particularly when it comes to the gyno. Sure, I’ve been a starving creative in New York and spent some time at the Margaret Sanger Center at Planned Parenthood on Bleecker Street. There you found women like me, too poor to attain health insurance but not poor enough to be considered poor. Does this strike you to be familiar Americans?

Nevertheless, I hold dual citizenship in the US & in Hungary. Clever me, believed I could obtain free medical care while in Hungary, one of the reasons I scheduled an appointment to see the doctor here. In Eastern Europe. Yes. I am crazy. (more…)

Camus Quote

Posted in art, artists, beauty, Feminism, friendship, health, humor, life, love, music, new york, oldies, relationships, Uncategorized, vacation, WTF, yoga by the consummate on May 27, 2011

Camus and his existential thought patterns. His simplistic language has always captured me. I first read L’Étranger when I was about 14 years old, Robert Smith was my dream lover and The Cure’s KILLING AN ARAB inspired me to pick up the book. As an impressionable teen I felt akin to the narrator, Meursault’s, dilemma – not being able to fit in to the contradictory and oppressive rules of society. The outsider looking in – that is me. Things could be ever so simple if I agreed to follow the rules but alas, my wild heart cannot be tamed. The personal musings of my blog reflect my emotional and mental state at moments, but what I’d like to remind you readers is that however I am feeling, know, that I am stronger than I lead on to be and that I have begun to love myself more than my tendency to punish myself.

C’est Cauchemar

I have dreams with a recurring theme – they are all about me + you. I wish they would stop and we could talk. So get out of my dreams and into my car. Oh wait, I don’t have a car but you understand what I mean right?

Ikon Allah

If G-d wills it…

Is it possible that I am becoming more religious in a sense? My recent trip to Israel left me more proud of my heritage + culture but also with a profound sense of faith. I spent much time in Jaffa where there is a beautiful blend of Jews + Muslims living harmoniously with one another. One day, I found myself sitting on the rocks above waves crashing on the beach with strangers at 4 in the morning. We looked up at the stars and thanked G-d for the beauty we were experiencing. At that moment the Iman began his calls for prayers at the mosque. To hear this sound before dawn was eerie and other worldly. I felt as if I was having an out of body experience. The sound wasn’t unfamiliar, I’ve heard it before but I’ve changed.  As the vocalist Abdullahi sings “Ikon Allah” – Will of G-d, I too sing this tune. If certain things in my life are meant to be, it is the will of G-d and I leave it up to the higher powers that be. I know what I want but if it it is the will of G-d, it will come to be.

It’s a long journey. I go in and out of different moods. Mostly, I am trying to overcome the pain of losing you. I’ve spent too much time in sheer anguish that the anger, albeit it’s ugliness, is welcome. I, unlike you, have not dedicated myself to the eradication of your existence in my life. I love and cherish you. There are so many words I want to say to you. So many things I want to explain. Perhaps in time.

Misguided Angel

Will you love me ’til I’m dead? Even with my past discrepancies?

Nobody’s perfect. We have periods in our lives (or perhaps for some, like the subject of this song, an entire lifetime) of misguiding. But when you fall in love, it doesn’t matter what kinds of discrepancies a person has, you love to love. I feel like often we think we can accept a person and their misgivings but in reality we can’t handle these so we berate them for what they cannot change.  In this case, there are two options: #1) to walk away #2) to accept + perhaps, if we feel wronged, forgive.

UPDATE: I had to replace the Linda Ronstadt version with Joni Mitchell + Johnny Cash (not complaining here) but I do prefer Ms. Ronstadt’s version for my means of expression. Perhaps it’s because it speaks to my heart + what it is feeling at the moment. I highly recommend you listen to that version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXdaxiIXBcI.

Challenger Way

American Jesus – Bad Religion

25 years ago today I sat in the computer lab at school while Mrs. Ryan aired the live broadcast of the Space Shuttle Challenger’s launch. Kindergartners and 1st Graders were seated in anticipation as most of our daddies and mommies had lent a hand in building the space craft. The Challenger had been towed down 10th Street East on its way to Edwards Air Force Base where it was to be place on top of an airplane and flown to Cape Canaveral, Florida.

That day in Mrs. Ryan’s class is deeply seeded in my mind. The Challenger symbolized the hope of my youth, in the US during the 1980’s we were filled with possibilities and a desire to advance. At the height of its growth and the fastest expanding city in the US, my town, the largest Aerospace community in the world, the Challenger meant progress and a job well done. It meant they were all moving in the right direction. Blue collar workers were confident in the prescribed dose of Republican bullshit and propaganda. We were, after all, winning the arms race against the Russians.

My 1st grade class co-taught by Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Gunderson was apart of the process since Day 1 with building models, learning about the astronauts and visiting the plant where the Shuttle was partially built. The teachers were overwhelmingly enthused by Christa McAuliffe, the teacher chosen to ride in space as the first non-astronaut human. It meant a generation of children would know that teaching meant so much more than a classroom setting, it meant reaching the limits of space.

The explosion was something none of us could fathom. I remember being seated in a dark computer lab with my peers crying, unable to understand what happened. I think it was in the instance of the explosion that a whole generation of Americans realized how fragile we actually were. That sometimes lady luck isn’t on our side and on that day Jesus was not an American citizen.
